The Going Merry is a wonderful example of how to integrate an object into your story and bring it to live. In One Piece Going merry is made into a proper character by Oda that enriches his storytelling and the narrative over all. This technique is called anthropomorphism, turning an object into a person. Thus it is possible that the going merry saves the straw hats and that the going merry funeral is such an emotional affair.
