"Marghe e Giulia, crescere in diretta" is a documentary by Alberto Gottardo and Francesca Sironi, following the lives of two baby YouTube influencers and their family. Sisters Marghe and Giulia, aged 9 and 12, are known as “Marghe Giulia Kawaii” by their over 300,000 followers and their videos have been viewed millions of times. The documentary examines the effects of their new found fame and explores its influence on their private lives, where daily habits and online sharing seem to constantly overlap. Web stars are the celebrities and true entertainers of the new generation. These platforms have changed the habits of billions of people. In Marghe and Giulia’s home this transformation takes the close, real shape of a domestic presence. It becomes a private issue. We wanted to understand what it means to be kids amid the empowerment and limits of this type of fame, what it means to grow up projecting your own successes and shortcomings from the immediate reactions of the online community. During the two years of work - we regularly visited the family since May 2017 - the documentary grew up with the family, followed their new normality, inside and outside their commitment to the virtual presence which surrounded them.
